Volume 38 Number 3 - Spring 2011
This seasonal collection comes with both treble and bass clef euphonium parts and is cleanly printed and spaced with no problematic page turns. The ranges are euphonium 1 and 2 c to g1, tuba 1 G to g, and tuba 2 FF to e-flat. The tuba 1 part would probably lie most comfortably on E-flat or F tuba because it stays consistently in the mid to upper staff. It would also work as a third euphonium part if the ensemble was top heavy. The tunes arranged include “In dulci jublio,” “Away in a Manger,” “Once in Royal David’s City,” “Bring a torch Jeanette Isabella,” “Angles we have heard on High,” “Joy to the World,” and range from a scant 12 measures (plus repeats) to 58 measures. They would work for any type of holiday concert or gathering, at the mall or outdoors, or possibly as an audience sing-along. The ensemble will appreciate the fairness with which the melody is divided and shared though scoring is fairly thick with all parts playing practically all the time. Endurance should not be an issue though since the range is not screaming high, and this arrangement would be accessible to all levels of ensemble, high school through professional. It is refreshing to see an arrangement that is this entertaining for both player and audience in this genre.
